Why has My Kitchen Sink Started to Gurgle & How to Fix in Pinehurst, TX? Unclog P-Trap, Vent & More

Do you have a sink that gurgles each time water runs down the drain? You may assume there is a clog. However, a sink can gurgle for a number of different reasons. There may indeed be a clog or the gurgling may be due to another problem altogether. M & C Orsack Plumbing will help you troubleshoot your gurgling sink and how to correct the problem.

Identify which Sink is Gurgling

The first step to troubleshooting a gurgling sink is to identify which sink or sinks are gurgling. If one sink is gurgling then the problem is most likely localized at that sink. However, if more than one sink is gurgling then the problem may be anywhere in the drainage line that the sinks connect to. Additionally, knowing what sinks or sink is making the noise also makes it easier to determine the cause. For example, a kitchen sink may gurgle due to an obstruction in the drain that may be caused by an oil or grease build up. If it is a shower drain gurgling there may be soap scum built up in the drain or hair.

How Do You Find a Blockage in Plumbing?

When you have identified which sinks or drains are making the gurgling noise you will want to inspect for some common blockages. A clog or blockage is the common culprit behind a gurgling sink.
Clogged P-Trap – The first place to look for a blockage is in the P-trap. The P-trap is the curved part of the piping that is found underneath the sink. The curved section of pipe is designed to trap a small amount of water. The water acts as a shield that prevents the sewer gas from rising out of the drain. Due to the T-trap’s design, it is common for a clog to develop at the bottom of the curve. Undo the T-trap section of the piping and clear out any blockages. You can also run a snake down the drain to clear out a clog if you have one.
Blocked Sink Vent – Another common area that creates a blockage is the sink vent. A sink or drainage system requires an air flow to the drainage line. The vent is a pipe that connects to the drain and runs up to the roof. This pipe helps to create a vacuum like suction which ensures the water waste runs through the drain and into the sewer system. Check the vent pipe as birds or debris may have blocked the top of the pipe preventing proper ventilation.
