How Does a Dishwasher Work?
The basic fundamentals of a dishwasher include people rinsing the debris off of the dishes, strategically placing it in the dishwasher, adding the detergent accordingly, setting it to the wash cycle, and turning it on. From there, the dishwasher adds water and heats it to the proper temperatures. At the activated time, the detergent is dispensed and the water shoots from the jets to get the dishes clean and sanitized. The dirty water is drained and the dishes are sprayed again for a final rinse. The dishwasher is drained again and the heated air dries the dishes. There are a variety of sensors that detect the water levels and such to ensure the dishwashers efficiency and overall performance. As a result, most people generally know when their dishwasher is not filling with water to begin with.
Why Won’t Dishwasher Fill with Water?
Below are the most common reasons as to why the dishwasher is not filling water.
1) Faulty or Damaged Float: There is a piece called the float inside of the dishwasher. The float’s purpose is to recognize when enough water has filled within the dishwasher and then stopping that flow of water. When the float is stuck at its pre-set level, however, the water won’t flow into the dishwasher. The float can get stuck when debris causes it stick or prevents it from lowering or when it the float switch doesn’t respond and needs replacing.
2) Malfunctioning Door Switch: In the event the door switch of the dishwasher is not operating properly, it will not sense whether or not the door is closed, thus it will not fill with water. Visually inspect the switch to see if it is damaged by evaluating the prong inside the tub. If it is in fact broken, it will need to be replaced. If the switch is intact, you will have to test if it is working with a multi-meter or contact a professional plumber.
3) Hoses that are Kinked. There is a kick-plate panel with hoses attached to it within the dishwasher. The hoses are designed to funnel water into the dishwasher. If these hoses are damaged or kinked, the water will not be able to get inside the dishwasher. Check the hoses and ensure they are straightened and in optimal condition. Over time, older hoses can become dried out and susceptible to cracks and other damage. Be sure to replace them if they are damaged.
