Forgetting Water Shut Off Valve
When replacing a faucet one of the very first steps that many people forget to do is to turn off the water. Most faucets will have a water shut off valve which needs to be turned off before you begin removing the old faucet. A result of failing to turn off the water will result in a major water mess. Remember, if you choose to replace your own faucet make sure to turn the water off at the shut off valve.
Neglecting to Seal the Plumbing Threads
When replacing a faucet it is important to know which threads will need to be sealed. There are a number of connecting pipes and hoses, some of which needs to be sealed with plumber tape. Hose or pipes that screw into each other that doesn’t have a compression fitting will need be sealed with plumber tape. Plumber tape is important as it prevents leaks, corrosion, and also to prevent wasting water.
Do Not Reuse Old Plumbing Fixture Parts
During a faucet replacement it is common to reuse old parts, especially if you didn’t buy new ones. Depending on the age of the older part and whether there is any corrosion is present, sometimes it isn’t always a good idea to reuse older parts. For example, a compression fitting should never be reused as they don’t always conform to the other fitting. If you replace one side of the plumbing feature and not the other, the fitting will develop a leak. Old rusting or degrading hoses or pipes is never a good sign. To avoid leaks or a big water disaster, avoid reusing older parts. When possible, always start fresh.
Not Knowing Plumbing Fixture Parts
When you decide to replace and install your own faucets, it is important to know all of the parts of the faucet and how they properly go together. If you find yourself guessing about a part or matching up proper sizes, you may want to consider seeking a professional plumber to help install your faucets. Using improperly sized parts or not putting the faucet together correctly can have terrible results including leaks and even flooding.
Soldering Defects
If you have to cut off a valve of other piece that is welded or soldered to the copper piping, it is important that you properly solder the new component correctly. When soldering copper couplings it is common for some water to be dripping. However, you will want to keep the soldering site dry and free of water or the soldering job will not last or work at all. Make sure when soldering your copper pipes are dry.
