Avoiding Plumbing Disasters & Emergencies in Magnolia TX; Know Where the Emergency Shut Off Valves Are, How to Sweat Copper & Understand Pipe System

There are quite a few tasks a novice DIY plumber tries to attempt. For those that try to take on the minor projects, Orsack Plumbing Company would like to give a few tips and some of advice to help you avoid a disaster.
1. Know where the emergency shut off valves are. Before you begin any plumbing project, big or small, it is important to know where the water shut off valve is in your home. Depending on your home, there could be a shut off valve for every room that distributes water. Homes with a basement are usually where these valves are placed, or sometimes they are tucked away in a service panel. If you are uncertain which valve turns off which dispensing unit, begin the search. Turn off the valve and start flipping faucets to sinks and showers, and flushing toilets to discover what the water shut off valves controls. Know the main shut off valve that controls the whole house, typically found where the water originates into the home. Learn the quickest route to your valve, you never know when you will need a speedy shut off.
2. Know how to sweat copper. It is a rudimentary skill found in plumbing, and can be relatively easy. Clean the copper: add a little flux, heat the joint, and then apply the solder. This is a good skill to have for small fixes and adding valves. Although your solder joints won’t be as neat as the ones the pros make, they’ll be functional.
3. Understand your pipe system. Another important recon to any plumbing mission is to know the basic piping system for your home. Learn the basics of pipes, the function of vent pipes, drain lines and determine how much pitch a pipe needs. Know which walls house pipe work and where the main waste line leaves the house. The more you know and understand, the easier time you will have.
4. Put together a complete tool box. As with any job, utilizing the proper tools for each project is essential for efficient completion. It is always better to “have it and not need it” than “need it and not have it”. It can be quite annoying to be half ways through a job and realize you do not have all the proper tools. Leaving your work half way through to run to an home improvement store is frustrating, and could develop more problems upon your return.
5. Know your limitations. Often a task looks simple enough, especially if the professional explaining the job in the video has done the work so many times he can do it his sleep and make the job look easy. Don’t try and take on a project outside your limitations. Understand when a job needs a professional to ensure safety and efficiency.
