They can rear their ugly side in no time at all causing everything from minimal to extreme damage in their paths; in just a matter of moments. But can they affect the plumbing in nearby homes and business? Many have asked the question, and today we at Orsack Plumbing Company would like to dissect that question for the inquiring minds. Tornado season is from March to August after all.
Tornado Wind Damage to Roof, Windows … and Plumbing?
Following chaos left behind a tornado, there could be any number of things that have gone awry. While many have a tendency to focus on the exterior eye sores such as roofing catastrophes, broken windows, and other such examples, few don’t realize that a tornado could in fact fault your plumbing system.
Plumbing Inspection Checklist After Extreme Wind Tornado Storms
Below are a few things to check for to ensure your plumbing wasn’t victimized by the latest tornado passing through.
– Test for plumbing performance. After you have assured yourself and loved ones that your home itself is structurally sound, check the plumbing’s performance and make certain everything is working as it should. Go through each room in your home and turn on anything that has to do with water; faucets are working as before, toilets flush efficiently, showerheads are getting enough pressure, and all appliances that use water are in optimal use. Be sure to take note on how all the fixtures are functioning, and are they functioning up to par as to how they should. If one or more of your plumbing pipes and/or fixtures is not up to the task, call in a professional plumber to perform an evaluation at the very least.
– Plumbing equipment inspection. Following the performance check, next is the inspection of all major appliances. Water heaters, pumps, air conditioning systems, and plumbing associated appliances need to be cycled through and inspected to ensure spot on accuracy and sufficient performance. In this exercise, you are killing two birds with one stone so to speak, first you are checking to see of the tornado caused any leaks in the water lines. The second objective once you know there are no visible leaks is that the equipment itself didn’t sustain any bending, cracks, or other damages. Dishwasher and wash machine type appliances can easily be checked by running a load through their full cycles.
– Don’t neglect septic tank system evaluation. Most the time, the only concern homeowners give thought to the septic system is when the tank is due for a pump. But tornadoes can cause deteriorating damage on septic tanks without you realizing it. If heavy debris was struck by the sizable force of a tornado, chances are there is damage, call on a pro to evaluate the extent of it. Tornadoes often come with hail storms and flooding conditions, both of which can stop your septic’s drain field from properly filtering the effluent that is a byproduct of the septic tank. If after a tornado, which brought on hailstorms and flood has left your septic drain field with abnormal waterlog or it took excessive abuse during a hail storm, it is in your best interest to contact a professional to ensure there was no disruptive damage to your septic tank.
