List of Basic But Must Have Plumbing Tools & Their Functions in The Woodlands, TX

Owning a home means you’ll eventually run into a plumbing issue. It’s inevitable. Whether you’re an avid do-it-yourselfer or you’d rather just hire someone to do the job, you need to have the right tools on hand. The toolbox in your garage should have the right tools in it so you’re ready to tackle a temporary repair for plumbing issues. These will come in handy while you’re waiting for the plumber to arrive.

Essential Plumbing Tool List

1. Flange & cup plungers. Drains and toilets can get clogged very easily. You should always have two plungers available to get them unclogged. The best plunger to use on a toilet is a flange plunger and cup plungers are recommended for unclogged sinks, showers and bathtubs.
2. Hand auger. Sometimes a plunger won’t do the trick and you may need to use another tool. The hand auger lets you feed a metal wire down into the sink or the drain. When the wire pierces the clog, you’ll be able crank the wire back out. Hand augers should not be used on toilets. You will need to use a toilet auger.
3. Adjustable wrench. Most plumbing pieces are fitted with hexagonal-shaped nuts, fittings and supply lines that come in many sizes. The best way to deal with them is to have an adjustable wrench in your toolbox that has a firm grip to make the job easier. Every tool box needs to have a 6- and 10- inch adjustable wrench.
4. Pipe wrench. This tool is the partner to the adjustable wrench and is used to tighten or loosen the actual plumbing pipes. Having two in your toolbox will come in handy when you need to grip the pipe and the use the other to tighten or loosen the fitting.
5. Tongue-and-groove pliers. These pliers are curved and are great at getting a grip on something. They are also great at grabbing, pulling, twisting or holding on to something of almost any size because the slip-joint can be adjusted to different sizes.
6. Hacksaw. This versatile saw can cut through plastic or metal pipes, hardware, screws, nuts and bolts. Tough cuts require the blade to be tense in the frame and make sure you have extra blades on hand.
7. Metal file. When you’re dealing with pipes there are times that they will need to be filed. This file will remove burrs and will smooth out edges to make the application of plumber’s tape and fittings easier, more so if the pipe has just been cut.
8. Plumber’s tape. Most plumbing pipes have connections that are threaded and more likely to leak when they get worn or damaged. Plumber’s tape will make the fitting more secure and can come in handy to temporarily stop a leak while you wait for a plumber.
