To make kitchen activities a lot easier to complete, garbage disposals are a convenient appliance. The drains can easily clog, as we are so accustomed to use the disposal accordingly, because the low efficiency of a garbage disposal and preserving our drains and plumbing is the main goal. We at M and C Orsack Plumbing would like to take the opportunity to share important maintenance and care tips for the garbage disposal to ensure it operates at its full potential and help you prevent problems for your drains.

Know the Limits of Garbage Disposal

There are things that should never be introduced to the garbage disposal and that is an important ting for everyone to know. There are some materials that will not be conducive to the garbage disposal and will only cause damage. The moving parts can have these materials lodged in between them where the motor will overheat and cause irreparable damage. Be sure to consult your manual if you are not sure what is and is not appropriate for the garbage disposal. Plastics and metals are a prime example.

Why Not Use Hot Water in Garbage Disposal?

Cold water should only be and always running when the garbage disposal is active. The food particles are better flushed down the drain, the water keeps the blades lubricated, and cool water prevents the motor from overheating.

Never Pour Grease Down the Garbage Disposal

Grease should never be poured down the drains as it gets bound up in the pipes. Though it may seem like an effective, quick solution to dispose of the cooking crease, it will eventually buildup and the layers of residual grease deposits leads to odors, other issues. Grease is known to cause clogs that cause your pipes to leak and eventually burst if they are not properly cleaned and repaired. If you want to avoid costly consequences, it is in your better interest to find alternatives to grease disposal than running through the garbage disposal.

Clean Garbage Disposal

Maintaining the garbage disposal is important to do on a regular basis in order to keep the kitchen running efficiently. The garbage disposal will accumulate food particles and potentially mildew, in the nooks and crannies as well as between the blades. If they are not properly cleaned, or the blades managed, the odors and other issues develop soon. To keep the blades proficient and the odors from developing, follow the steps below.
– Using an ice cube tray or two, pour concentrated vinegar into the cups and allow them time to freeze.
– After they freeze, drop the vinegar cubes through the garbage disposal, with the cool water running.
– For persistent or strong odors, process in the garbage disposal citrus fruit peelings.
The garbage disposal’s blades will maintain their sharpness from the ice and the vinegar aspect neutralize the odors and/or prevent them from developing; do this routine once a week. On a monthly basis, pour a pot of boiling hot water down the drain, without the disposal running, then immediately turn the cool water tap on and run the garbage disposal for a few moments to clean and flush any residues and leftover tidbits.
