Many homes use gas for cooking, hot water and heating their home. Gas or propane is a cheap and effective resource for urban use. However, the use of gas isn’t without risk. It is common knowledge that gas is flammable and many fires are caused by leaky gas lines each year. Orsack Plumbing Company would like to help make homeowners aware of gas risks and share how to detect gas leaks and what to do when a gas leak is discovered.
Gas Leak Tester
In most cases the homeowner or household member often notices a strange smell or whistling sound. Both are signs of a gas leak. The smell of gas is unmistakable. When you believe there is a gas leak in your home, you will want to do two things before you begin your search for the leaks. The first thing you should do is to go and shut off the gas to your home. The second thing is to open all the windows in your home. With those two things accomplished, begin your search for the leak. Go to the area where the smell of the gas is the strongest. Check the stove if you have a gas operated style stove and oven. See if they were left on. Often gas stove valves were left slightly open. Open the oven also and see if the gas smell is strongest inside. If you have a gas fireplace in your home, check to see if the gas is turned on or left on by accident.
Who to Call for Gas Leak Repair?
If you can find any obvious signs of where the gas leak is coming from, you will then want to begin checking the exposed gas lines in the affected area. To check the gas lines you will want to either turn the gas back or blow air through the pipes using an air compressor. You will then want to start by mixing water and liquid dish soap in a bucket. With either the gas on or air being pumped into the gas lines, use a sponge and soak the gas lines. If you see bubbling anywhere on the line, that is the source of the gas leak. When the leak has been found, either tape the leak to help prevent further leaking until you’re able to contact a repair technician, or turn your gas off until the repair technician is able to repair the leak.
What to Do if You Find a Gas Leak in Your House?
If you arrive at your home and you hear both a noise and smell gas, there are certain steps you should take to prevent a fire. As before, the first two things you should do is turn of the gas line into your home and open all the windows. Some other additional safety precautions are not to smoke, or ignite a match or lighter. Avoid turning on any electrical equipment such as lights and TVs. They can trigger a spark that can ignite a fire if the spark comes in contact with the gas. If there are any naked flames such as from a candle, make sure you put out all fire.
