Signs of Rust in Water: The presence of rust in your water is something that can happen especially if you have an older home. The pipes are made from iron and over time they can potentially start to rust. The rust will appear in your water source which you can see if you fill up a clear cup. The water will have a reddish or brown color to it and you can smell or even taste the presence of metal. The small particles are in the water and although it is not pleasant to look at it is not necessarily bad for your health. There are some disorders that can be dangerous when you are using water that has rust in it but an otherwise healthy person won’t have a problem. That does not mean that you don’t want to have it looked at and the pipes fixed or replaced.
Cold or Hot Brown Water from Faucet: There are several areas that the rust can originate from. It is a great idea to know where it is coming from so you know what is needed for repairs. The test you can do at your own home is to use the same faucet that you found the rust. Run the cold side only and fill up a glass that you can see through. Check for rust and clean the glass out. Then run the hot side only and see if the water is still full of rust. Then allow the water to just run and see if the rust goes away. If you notice that the rust is only coming from cold or hot but not both or it clears up then the problem is your pipes, water heater or home. This is good to know so that you can have the repairs done. If you get constant rust from all faucets then the problem is often the main water source.
