When running a restaurant you quickly realize how important the grease traps and drainage system are. Having a clean and reliable grease trap and drainage system is essential to stay on top of cleaning dishes and preparing for the next day. When a grease trap or the drainage system becomes clogged, it can slow down and even stop production in the kitchen. To ensure your grease traps and drainage stays clean, M&C Orsack Plumbing Contractor will share how to keep grease traps and your drainage system clean and in working order.
Restaurant Grease Trap Cleaning
The grease trap is an additional filtering system that sits between the sink and the drainage system. The grease trap is an important element to the restaurant as it helps to remove the oils, grease, and solids from all of the dirty dishes. It is important to remove the grease, oils, and solids inside the grease trap to prevent the grease trap from gumming up and developing eventual clogs. To see if it is time to clean the grease trap, you will start by sticking a ruler inside and see how deep the grease is. As the size of grease traps will vary, you will need to know how much the grease trap can contain before it needs to be cleaned out. If it is time to clean out the grease trap, you will need a bucket or a small pump and begin removing the water from out of the grease trap. Most of the solids, oils and grease will need to be removed by scooping it out. Make sure to put the solid waste into a bucket and or into a garbage bag for proper disposal. You may need to scrub the stubborn residue off the side of the grease trap. Once the inside of the grease trap has been cleaned, you will want to put the proper amount of water back into the grease trap and put the lid back on. It is important to keep the grease trap cleaned to prevent the grease, oil and food from dumping into the rest of the drainage system.
Overflowing Grease Traps & Other Cleaning Mistakes
When cleaning grease traps or even the drainage system, never use chemicals. Chemicals can cause damage to the piping and the grease trap. If you are having a hard time removing residue inside the grease trap you can use baking soda and vinegar to clean off the inside of the grease trap. If absolutely necessary you can use bleach to clean the grease trap and remove odors. To help prevent the need for frequent grease trap cleaning it is recommended to put all scraps and discarded food into the trash can before washing the dishes. By reducing the amount of residue that is on the dishes before washing them, you can help prolong the need for grease trap cleaning.
