Orsack Plumbing Company lists why your drains may smell bad and what you can do about it.
Symptom of a Gas Leak: If you are starting to smell an odor that is similar to rotten eggs you may have a problem with gas leaking. Under each drain there are pipes that run to drain the water and lines that are bringing in the water. One of the drains has what is called a P-trap and that is supposed to be full of water. If the water dries out of this trap you have an open line for the gas to come back up the pipe and into the home. The water is there to protect you from the gas so when it is gone it can be a problem. The best way to prevent this from happening is to run the water in each drain once a day. That will make sure that the water does not evaporate. You want to run the water for several minutes even after you start to smell the odor. It should fill the trap back up and stop the gas from leaking.
Sewer Line Backing Up into House: If you are smelling a bad odor that is similar to sewer you may have a problem with the sewer lines backing up. If this happens you need to treat it as soon as possible because the contaminated water can be dangerous for your health. If the sewer backs up it can start to spill out in the house and that can be a bigger problem to clean up later. You can call a professional plumber to come out and treat your home for a sewer back up.
