Inspect the Toilet Tank Float Valve
If you have a leaky toilet, the first thing to check out is the float inside the tank. This handy thing shuts off the water intake once it reaches the specified height. If the float is set above the level of the overflow tube, it will never reach to the needed point and water will simply drain down the tube and into the toilet bowl, causing a great over flow if not caught immediately. There are usually markings indicating where the necessary height of water should be. If there isn’t one, a good idea is about an inch from the top. To fix your float, loosen the screw or push the clip to get the float where it needs to be, and bam! A fixed float.
Faulty Toilet Flapper
A faulty flapper could be another assailant. The flapper opens and closes the valve that leads from the tank to the bowl when you flush. If the flapper is not functioning properly, it could be the culprit to your leaky toilet, your enlarged water bill, and the annoying water mess. The chain to this mechanism is recommended for inspection first, if the chain is too long or short, disaster can strike, or sometimes it gets caught preventing the flapper from working accordingly. A simple fix is to add or remove links as needed to ensure proper operation of the flapper. If it is not the chain, perhaps a closer inspection of the flapper is required. Sometimes the flapper can crack and a simple replacement is all it will take to get it working optimally again.

After checking the noted obvious areas of your toilet, it is reasonable to check the surrounding area of your toilet for leaks. There is a possibility that your fill valve has worn out and can no longer handle the task of stopping water from collecting in your tank. Replacing the valve is the only thing that can save the day.
